Tanisha’s got Christmas talent!

We had a lovely evening on Tuesday at our annual Horbury’s Got Christmas Talent!

Well done to all finalists and congratulations to our winner Tanisha Drummond-Bateman of Europe House!

The evening raised £125 for Wakefield Hospice – thank you very much for your kind donations.

One talented Catering Team!

The whole Academy came together yesterday for a scrumptious Christmas dinner, courtesy of our fabulous Catering Team, pictured below!

Students and staff raised an additional £636 for Wakefield Hospice through a Christmas jumper day, which along with the festive food, helped to get everyone in the Christmas spirit!

All shopped out…

Our Year 11s managed to squeeze in some last minute Christmas shopping at Meadowhall on Tuesday as a reward for their exemplary behaviour during their recent Pre-Public Exams. From the number of shopping bags and happy faces on the coach at the end of the day I’d say it was a successful trip!

Shop Well for Less

On the subject of shopping……BBC One are currently casting for a third series of Shop Well for Less and have asked us to spread the word. They’re looking for fun and lively families and households to take part in their show which offers tips on how to spend without the splurge. To take part, email shopwell@rdftelevision.com or call 0117 970 7670.

Could you be a special?

West Yorkshire Police would like us to let you know that they’ll be accepting applicants aged 18 and over to join the Special Constabulary in the new year.

They will be holding a recruiting seminar on Thursday 4th January 2018, at Wakefield District HQ, Havertop Lane, WF6 1GX. The seminar will discuss the role of a Special Constable, as well as the recruitment process and there will be an opportunity to chat to current Special Constables. To book your place, email wakefield.specialsvolunteers@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

All set to ‘Brave the Shave’

Written by Lewis Costello

Back in July, we (Stanley Rangers ARLFC) sadly lost our good friend Evan Hawksworth following an accidental knock to the head during a rugby game. As a team, we have pulled together and have already raised £35,000 in his memory, but we’re keen to raise more.

With this in mind, I have decided to take on the ‘Brave the Shave’ challenge and will be shaving my head on Friday 19th January in the hope of raising more money for the RFL Benevolent Fund.

If you would like to sponsor me, you can do so via my Just Giving page.

I’ll update you as to how much I raise, along with before and after photos and a film clip of the shave. Wish me luck and thank you very much in advance!

Check out our Spring Term Enrichment Activities…

Details of next term’s Enrichment Activities have now been released and are available here.

These activities allow you to gain experience and skills in areas not typically part of your everyday curriculum. Enhancing your personal attributes by opting to gain new experiences is extremely desirable to future employers and higher education providers…it’s also great fun to try something new and different!

Whether you’re in year 7, 8 or 9 there are many varied enrichment sessions to choose from and the ones that are open to everyone are a great opportunity to make friends in other year groups!

Enrichments for the Spring term are available from Monday 15th January and run from 12.10pm to 12.45pm or from 2.45pm to 3.45pm, unless otherwise stated.

Dates for your diary

A little reminder of some upcoming dates for your diary…

Friday 22nd December – Inset Day: Academy closed to students

Monday 8th January – All students, in all year groups, are expected to return to the Academy as usual.  Please remember, full uniform will be required – this includes NO facial piercings or extreme hair styles or colouring.  Students not adhering to our uniform expectations will be asked to change into our supply of uniform or placed in Isolation.

And finally…

Congratulations Natasha Smith and Leah Greenwood, two of 25 students chosen by West Yorkshire Police to become Police Cadets!

Natasha and Leah made it through two rounds of interviews and were ‘passed out’ at a parade last weekend after 10 weeks of training!....I’ve heard there were over 100 applicants and only 25 places so this is a fabulous achievement girls, well done!

PS…

Well done to Elliott Richardson who has signed an Academy Scholarship contract with Wakefield Trinity Rugby League Club!
