Horbury Academy does Cineworld!

Cineworld was packed full of beaming faces this morning when we visited for our annual rewards trip!

Almost 90% of students were invited to Cineworld this year, with invitations awarded to those who have demonstrated a good Attitude to Learning in recent progress checks, together with exemplary behaviour this Academic year.

As you can see, a fabulous time was had by all!...

Year 11 Parents’ Information Evening

Thank you to all the Year 11 parents and carers who attended Wednesday’s Parents’ Information Evening. We appreciate not everyone was able to attend and have therefore uploaded the resources used on the evening to our website here.

Sports Relief – Friday 23rd March

Remember, we’ll be supporting Sports Relief next Friday with a series of competitions at lunchtime, testing strength, flexibility, power and co-ordination, at a cost of 50p per test, or £1 for all four.

We’ll also have a bake sale, dodgeball play offs during PE lessons, and we’ll be visited by two Castleford Tigers coaches who will be coaching girls’ rugby for the day!

Students are to attend in full Academy uniform, as usual.

Introducing our new Parent Governor

Following a ballot, we are pleased to welcome Helen Pidcock as our new Parent Governor on the Local Governing Body of the Academy. We’re glad to have you on board, Helen!

British Science Week

Students have had a blast celebrating British Science Week this week! Year 7 have been using forensics to solve a mysterious crime, Year 8 were debating plastics, as plastic straws could soon be banned, Year 9 were problem solving the cliff-hanger from the classic movie ‘The Italian Job’, and Years 10 and 11 were looking at some of the weird and wonderful careers that need a scientific background! Year 9’s solutions will be judged next week so keep your eyes on the blog where the winners will be announced!

Go Higher West Yorkshire

Go Higher West Yorkshire have produced a guide for parents and carers to help young people to access and prepare for higher education. This booklet, which has gone to Years 9 and 10 this week, can be found here.

A busy week for our school reporters!

Yesterday, our BBC School Reporters attended a News Day event at Salford’s MediaCityUK where they discovered how to identify real news, use smartphones to make the news, and how to pursue a career in the media. They also enjoyed a tour of the studios where a range of programmes, including Newsround, are made!

The trip coincides with the publication of their new video news feature, for which they decided to investigate the issue of road safety on the school run, after it emerged that almost a classroom full of children are killed every week on the UK’s roads.

As if that wasn’t enough, a feature on the work the reporters have been doing since September has also been published in the Wakefield Express today!

Well done to our school reporters; Jemima Murray, Christian Conolly, Max Drew and Harvey Walker….fabulous work!

Rebranding Ossett Academy’s Sixth Form

Twelve of our Year 10 students visited Ossett Academy this week to discuss the rebranding of their Sixth Form. These students are now going to speak to their forms to discuss the ideas raised and will feedback to Jonathan Clarkson, Assistant Principal (Director of Sixth Form) at Ossett Academy, over the next few weeks. Jonathan emailed to say they were some of the most pleasant and well behaved students he had ever had the pleasure of dealing with and that they were a real credit to Horbury Academy! This fabulous feedback was directed towards Emily Crookes, Casey Osborne, Archie Mccort, Elanor Ineson, Helen Butler, Izzy Lindley, Will Asberry, Rachel Feather, Mary Murphy, Holly Punton, Samantha Whitworth and Ben Moorhouse…well done to you all!

National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day

Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is a form of sexual abuse that involves the manipulation and/or coercion of young people under the age of 18 into sexual activity.

This year’s National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day is set to take place on Sunday. It aims to highlight the issues surrounding CSE; encouraging everyone to think, spot and speak out against abuse and adopt a zero tolerance to adults developing inappropriate relationships with children or children developing inappropriate relationships with other children. Find out more here.

Read an EGG-cellent book lately?...

…Then why not bring your favourite character to life by joining the LRC Decorate an Egg Competition?! Just hand your creations to Mrs Fisher by Monday 26th March to be in with a chance of winning a prize!

Whilst I’m on the subject of books, remember we’re running Usbourne’s Sponsored Read until the end of March, with a prize for the person who has read the most books! Just visit Mrs Fisher in the LRC for a sponsorship form. Money raised will secure some free books for the LRC so get thinking about your recommendations!

Oh and don’t forget, students in the LRC are still collecting used postage stamps for charity. If you have any to donate, you’ll find a collection box on the desk in the LRC. Once they’ve built up a collection, students will be passing them on to the local resident collecting them in Horbury Library to give to charity!
