Busy raising money for Sports Relief!

We’ve had an action packed day at the Academy today in honour of Sports Relief, with a series of competitions at lunchtime testing; strength, flexibility, power and co-ordination.

We’ve also sold some Easter buns for the cause, held dodgeball play offs during PE lessons, and we were lucky enough to be visited by two Castleford Tigers coaches who have been coaching girls’ rugby! Thank you to everyone for your contributions!

Careers Day for Year 8

Written by Courteney Robinson

Yesterday, four Year 8 forms participated in Careers Day and learned about different jobs through different team challenges. We competed against each other using our skills, knowledge and experience of scenarios that might happen in the World of Work. This helped us to understand how the subjects we learn in the Academy help us in the future, even though we can’t see the relevance sometimes now. Students had to complete feedback which was positive. All other remaining Year 8 forms will get this opportunity in April. We would like to thank Jon from Panjango for spending time with us.

The Riot Act present ‘Deadly Distraction’

As part of their ‘Deadly Distraction’ theatre tour, the Riot Act, visited the Academy on Wednesday to deliver a production to Year 7, focussing on key road safety messages including distractions (like phones and music), identifying and coping with peer pressure, and personal responsibility and behaviour.

It was a powerful, engaging production which aimed to challenge perceptions and stimulate critical thinking and behaviour change. Thank you very much to the Riot Act for taking the time to visit us!

Year 10 Maths Fest

On Tuesday we hosted the FMSP Regional Year 10 Maths Fest for the fourth consecutive year. The event is comprised of a series of Maths Challenges for teams of Year 10 students, where schools of each region compete against each other. The other schools taking part were Holmfirth High School, Cockburn School, Kirk Belk Academy and Woodkirk Academy.

We had two teams take part and were delighted when our boys’ team were crowned overall winners! Well done Ruby Wilson, Faye Ambler, Lucy Squires and Isabelle Lindley…and to our winning team; Evan Dennis, James Emeny, Will Asbery and Mustafa Arshad!

Success at the Wakefield Schools’ Netball Tournament

This week Ms Beaumont took two teams to the Wakefield Schools’ Netball Tournament and the results were as follows!...

Our first team defeated Freeston Academy, Wakefield Girls’ High School’s B team, Castleford Academy and Outwood Academy, placing them in the semi-final where they played Kettlethorpe High School and won! In the final they lost to Wakefield Girls’ High School’s A team and so finished a very respectable second place!

Our second team lost to Ossett Academy, Kettlethorpe High School and Wakefield Girls’ High School but won against St Wilfreds, The Kings School and Ackworth School. I’ve heard both teams played some great netball so a big well done to Team 1 - Sophie Clucas, Alice Waters, Ashleigh Jones, Georgia Field, Emma Cheverton, Bella Haigh and Jane Chambers, and to Team 2 - Polly Jackson, Georgina Slade, Emily Garner, Emily Hall, Amy Cook, Marina Nasir and Leonna Tipping.

Nicole Hirst received some more exciting news yesterday in the form of an invitation to attend The Broadcom MASTERS International, taking place in Pittsburgh, America in May! This prestigious event brings together the world's brightest 12 to 14 year olds - chosen for their excellence in science, engineering and leadership. They are rising stars who come together to represent their nations for this international exchange.

Nicole will participate in specialised programming, fun and engaging hands-on science and engineering activities, and will also attend activities at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Well done Nicole, you’re certainly flying high!!

PS…

Good luck to our Accord Multi Academy Trust Team running the Wakefield 10k on Sunday for Wakefield Hospice! If you’d like to contribute, you can do so here. The company who raises the most sponsorship for the event will win £300 of sports related vouchers which would benefit students across the MAT should they win!
